11.30.2008

Sunday afternoon

One Good Thing: friends, old and otherwise
One Funny Thing: snow coming down like gangbusters but not sticking on the ground...yet....
One Weird Thing: a friend who get *so* angry when I cancel a casual plan. Reciprocity is strange.

One God Thing: Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.
[Romans xiv. 5]
One Music Thing:
The Elements Song. Oh, yeah.
One Book Thing: Carl Sandburg, Selected Poems. Brilliant!

11.29.2008

Saturday night

One Good Thing: The day is nearly over.
One Funny Thing: I'm doing laundry. I hate laundry. But...I hate wearing dirty clothes more.
One Weird Thing: This bug we've got...sux. And it mutates. With me, it has been nausea, achiness and tiredness. Beast got the lower GI version, with tiredness and a runny nose. Sparky now has the upper GI version, with tiredness (although this is Day One, so anything else could happen at any time).

One God Thing:"Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 I'm trying, but today may not have been my best effort here.
One Music Thing: No music today. Which might explain some things.
One Book Thing: I'm currently reading three books: one historical fiction, one book on language, and one book on U.S. geography. I'm listening to a mystery on CD in the truck. I have three books to 'report' in my blog, besides those.

10.17.2008

Friday early morning

One Good Thing: I haven't yelled at anyone yet.
One Funny Thing: I want to scream bloody murder at someone this early in the morning.
One Weird Thing: It's not my kid.

One God Thing: "Thou shalt not murder."
One Music Thing: I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy.
One Book Thing: I'm reading three books right now about tough-talking women P.I.s/cops. It's getting confusing.

9.13.2008

Saturday early morning

One Good Thing: Beast seems to have slept well last night.
One Funny Thing: The length of time it took me to figure out the location of the comment on the last post. I wish, now, I'd separated my comments by blog in Haloscan. Oh, well. It can't be a good sign if you forget a blog, no?
One Weird Thing: I've been a better mood all week that the situation seems to warrant.

One God Thing: "Jesus loves me, yes He does."
One Music Thing: Aside from the above song?
One Book Thing: I'm reading a lot of nonfiction right now that involves stretching my brain around some new concepts in description of the world around me. Maybe that's why I feel unaccountably less grim: I'm learning something!

7.04.2008

Friday mid-afternoon

One Good Thing: The weather is awesome: not overly hot, not overly muggy. Lovely. Weird for July, but ok.
One Funny Thing: Sparky makes me laugh. I'm not sure why specifically, today, but he's pretty funny.
One Weird Thing: Much as I don't like fireworks, I do like the smell of them, post-firing. The neighborhood REEKS of that smell right now.

One God Thing: "He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him." Proverbs 18:13
One Music Thing: Daft Punk also makes me laugh.
One Book Thing: I currently have bookmarks in five (?) books. I'm insane.

6.02.2008

Monday afternoon

One Good Thing: Donuts for breakfast on a day when you have no milk and 5 minutes to spare on the way to work.
One Funny Thing: The blind leading the blind, at work.
One Weird Thing: The things that run through my head when I'm trying desperately to fall asleep when I know I really need the rest but I can't get to sleep....

One God Thing: Settled into bed last night, getting ready to pray. My mind both blank and racing. The one clear thought: "I don't even know what to pray for!" I laughed (silently), understanding that maybe the "for" was the problem. Decided to do a standard prayer, maybe that's all, or maybe it would get me rolling. The usuals weren't coming, so I thought, "Perhaps I need something new. A new standard." The thing that popped into my head at that moment? "Babe" by Styx. Read the lyrics [except the first stanza, maybe] and tell me that it wouldn't make a good prayer and/or hymn.
One Music Thing: Alexi Murdoch, especially "All My Days" but really all of the Time Without Consequence CD
One Book Thing: I've read about 8 novels in the past week. Almost nothing is actually worth mentioning. Now I'm slogging through Rapture by Susan Minot, which I love but which also creeps me out.

6.01.2008

Sunday evening

One Good Thing: The weather is awesome (though rather humid)
One Funny Thing: Sparky is doing a speech on Joey Ramone tomorrow; I found out while listening to him practice that Joey Ramone is not only older than me, he's older than my 54-year-old brother! Yow.
One Weird Thing: Me.

One God Thing: "Look upon my suffering and deliver me / for I have not forgotten your law." Psalm 119:153
One Music Thing: Aside from Joey? I got nothin'. Oh, and I discovered it's really hard to sing while yawning a few minutes ago.
One Book Thing: I'm rereading the Laura books. Just finished "Big Woods" and have moved on to "Prairie."

5.29.2008

very early Thursday

One Good Thing: I keep getting back up, each time I get dumped on the ground. Is that a good thing, or just a thing?
One Funny Thing: People are funny. Except when they stink.
One Weird Thing: The heart is weird. My heart is weird.

One God Thing: It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.
[Acts ix: 5]
One Music Thing: This verse from "Miami" by Counting Crows:
Can I say,
I wish that this weather would never leave?
It just gets hard to believe
That God sent this angel to watch over me
'Cause my angel
She don't receive my calls
Says I'm too dumb to fuck
Too dumb to fight
Too dumb to save

Well, maybe, I don't need no angel at all
One Book Thing: Sin: Selected Poems of Farough Farrokhzad, edited by Sholeh Wolpe. Gorgeous, lush Persian love poems by a crazy chick who looked amazingly similar to my crazy aunt Elaine.

5.10.2008

Saturday noon

One Good Thing: Friends, good weather, and long car rides.
One Funny Thing: Turns out, I know who the Ann0yed L!brar!an is.
One Weird Thing: Turns out, I shouldn't have been surprised.

One God Thing: "A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you; and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh." (Ezekial 36:26)
One Music Thing: I Love the World
One Book Thing: I just cataloged The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. AWESOME video-lecture.

5.09.2008

Friday morning

One Good Thing: Orange juice.
One Funny Thing: Cats.
One Weird Thing: Fevers, and the dreams they bring.

One God Thing: Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
[James 4:7]
One Music Thing: "I alone love you / I alone tempt you" ("I Alone", Live, from Throwing Copper)
One Book Thing: I'm reading a novel called A Promising Man (and about time), by Elizabeth Young. It's very "Bridget Jones"-y, but I am enjoying it more than I had initially guessed. Hidden depths, I suppose.

4.28.2008

Monday mid-day

One Good Thing: My mood is good. It's amazing how shoving EVERYthing into a closet in my brain and SLAMMING and LOCKING the door makes me functional.
One Funny Thing: I just discovered on Facebook the "weird girl" in my high school class. Do I "friend" her? Oh, the dilemmas? Would she reject me out of hand? I'd deserve nothing better!
One Weird Thing: Aside from being ok with being rejected? Uh...the weather? It's snaining (rain/snow) right now. And Sparky wore shorts and sandals to school--because, dammit, "It's SPRING, Mom--I don't care what the weather is like!"

One God Thing: "For to those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away." Matthew 13:12 [for everyone who thinks Jesus was all sweetness and light]
One Music Thing: I've rediscovered my college radio station. It still rocks; you can listen and see.
One Book Thing: I'm currently reading five books (six if you count the one in the car). Some things just don't change around here!

4.25.2008

Friday afternoon

One Good Thing: Today is the last workday of a very, very long work week.
One Funny Thing: I have a photograph of two guinea pigs on the back of my door at work, which I forgot to show my friend who happens to own said pigs.
One Weird Thing: The weather: sun; rain; sun and rain; rain; sun; and now some sort of NOAA warning. Wevs!

One God Thing: The wicked flee when no man pursueth.
[Prov. 28:1]
One Music Thing: "Better After All" by Jonatha Brooke
One Book Thing: I'm currently reading, very slowly, Otherwise Engaged by Suzanne Finnamore. It was good the first time through, and now it is sad and fraught. I love it, but it's making me *way* sad in the same way as do Jill A. Davis' books. Highly recommended.

3.23.2008

Middle of Saturday Night

One Good Thing: I am capable of more - in terms of sacrifice, empathy, friendship, and affection - than I had thought. That guy from Mad-town made a mess of things, but he certainly was not allowed to make a lasting mess of me.
One Funny Thing: When I was in high school, I used to write this on the covers of my notebooks:
Existence is meaningless, and life is absurd, so wipe that stupid smile off your face.
God knows why I thought of that right now, but it is pretty funny.
One Weird Thing: Life. Love. People.

One God Thing: "What will ye? Shall I come unto you with a rod, or in love, and in the spirit of meekness?" [1 Corinthians 4:21]
One Music Thing: "I Go Blind" (Hootie & the Blowfish) from scattered, smothered and covered - I love harmony!
One Book Thing: The Best Loved Poems of Korea [commence giggling]

3.17.2008

Monday noonish

One Good Thing: Seeing someone who makes you smile just 'cause of who they are.
One Funny Thing: How much a mood can change overnight.
One Weird Thing: How much a mood can change overnight!

One God Thing: Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. [John 15:13]
One Music Thing: "Angels" by Norah Jones/Thievery Corp.
One Book Thing: This title: I Just Want My Pants Back. I haven't read it yet, but I *love* that title!

3.16.2008

Late Saturday night

One Good Thing: A day out with a great friend, talking nonstop about everything and nothing, laughing hard, really connecting. Feeling him starting to blossom again, after too long underground.
One Funny Thing: An evening out with a good friend, talking a little but listening a lot. Seeing far too much of myself in her, and giving advice that I received from some good friends about 20 years ago.
One Weird Thing: I don't know where my Bible is, if I even have it anymore. One of my best friends is a minister, and all of my best friends are actively religious. What kind of heathen...?

One God Thing: We walk by faith, not by sight.
[2 Corinthians v. 7.]
One Music Thing: Nickelback. Against my better judgment (financially speaking) I bought Silver Side Up today. I {heart} Nickelback!
One Book Thing: I'm not in much of a reading mood lately. Thinking more about writing and pictures. 's not such a bad thing, right? Now and then?

3.14.2008

Friday morning

One Good Thing: I've met someone. I like him. He likes me.
One Funny Thing: Some of my friends are angry (or something like that) about the above.
One Weird Thing: I care more about my own happiness than my friends' lack of equanimity about the situation. That's rare!

One God Thing: The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land. [Song of Solomon; unsure of the exact citation]
One Music Thing: "Amy Hits the Atmosphere" by Counting Crows. Why doesn't anyone sing that in bars?
One Book Thing: I recently got a copy of The Game by Neil Strauss. We shall see....

3.05.2008

Wednesday afternoon

One Good Thing: Thinking "I should post to 1 Good Thing" makes me consider my day in a different, more positive, way.
One Funny Thing: My niece calls her son "Baby Booger." I don't know why, but that makes me laugh.
One Weird Thing: Earlier this week, I found food in my apt. that I don't recall buying. Ground beef, bananas.... No one else would've gotten it for me, so, when I was I shopping that I don't remember??

One God Thing: Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves' eyes. [Song of Solomon 1:15]
One Music Thing: 3 Doors Down has been making me happy lately. I like "I Feel You."
One Book Thing: Can we call this One Writing Thing, temporarily? The Secretary of the state in which I live is sponsoring (?) a writing "contest." I am not telling anyone [else] that I plan to enter. And I plan to win.

3.02.2008

Sunday night

One Good Thing: I'm feeling better. Better enough, even, that one of my dear friends came over tonight (with spicy Chinese food! Heaven!). We talked and laughed, ate Mongolian Beef, Pepper Steak, and Garlic Chicken, and watched Nip/Tuck. My sinuses are much happier now!
One Funny Thing: I've had the silliest picture in my head all day, of someone I dated in high school "playing the rake."
One Weird Thing: It was 40-some degrees today. Rain tonight, and snow tomorrow, and around zero on Tuesday. Welcome to late winter in the Midwest!

One God Thing: I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow. [Jeremiah 31:13]
One Music Thing: I made a mix CD today that I've been working out for the last year. Can't wait to share it!
One Book Thing: The last thing on my "agenda" for today is to page through the Houseplants book that I just checked out. ("The Green Thumb Guide to Easy Indoor Gardening.") I have no strong expectations for it; I'm just hoping to get some generally helpful ideas.

2.21.2008

Thursday morning

One Good Thing: The sky is blue, which means the sun will be out again today. It's also supposed to hit double-digit temperatures, above zero, today.
One Funny Thing: The world is a funny place. I just can't think of anything more than slightly amusing stuff right now. Very slightly.
One Weird Thing: I'm usually much more cheerful in the mornings.

One God Thing: I bought a new Bible on Monday. Also: "Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends." Proverbs 17:9
One Music Thing: I love listening to non-professional groups singing from the heart. Even if it's not perfect musically, it's wonderful to hear.
One Book Thing: I'm learning a great deal about fantasy as a genre due to the book (technically, it's a class) on CD that Sparky and I are listening to in the car. Not that I'm going to rush out and start reading it, but from a literary point of view, this series of lectures is very interesting.

2.16.2008

Saturday late morning

One Good Thing: The rather silly cardinal who keeps singing to me when I arrive at work in the mornings. I feel sorry for him--he must be COLD!--but I appreciate the greeting.
One Funny Thing: Moo quack.
One Weird Thing: The fact that I'm not furious that I didn't go to Florida this week. I really do need to go somewhere warm though. It's awful here.

One God Thing: "What is love? It is not that we loved God. It is that he loved us and sent his Son to give his life to pay for our sins. Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we should also love one another." I John 4:10-11
One Music Thing:
Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend
I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need
Somebody to lean on
One Book Thing: "Into the Forest" by Joan Hegland is a really wonderful book. Uplifting and realistic and funny.

2.10.2008

Sunday midday

One Good Thing: Being inside (outside temp currently -1 with a wind chill of -24)
One Funny Thing: Being fed apples by a three-year-old
One Weird Thing: Our microwave vent squeaks whenever the wind blows. It has the potential for major annoyance.

One God Thing: "" We ought always to thank God for you, brothers [and sisters], and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love every one of you has for each other is increasing." 2 Thessalonians 1:3
One Music Thing: The first thing that popped into my head were the lyrics to "Seek Ye" which we sing every Communion service. Usually makes me cry, too.
One Book Thing: I've finished two in the past 24 hours.

1.15.2008

Tuesday midmorning

One Good Thing: The sun might come out today
One Funny Thing: The irony of Beast being in Dallas this week is pretty funny.
One Weird Thing: I'm not freaking out. I should be. I'm not.

One God Thing: "But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ." Gal. 3:25-27
One Music Thing: The Arcade Fire, "Intervention" (because above all, irony and serendipity abide)
One Book Thing: One? Hah. Angelina Ballerina, ahoy.

1.11.2008

Friday morning

One Good Thing: Affection.
"Talk not of wasted affection. Affection never was wasted." [Henry Wadsworth Longfellow]
One Funny Thing: Hope.
“You will soon have an opportunity to make a change to your advantage.” [fortune cookie fortune]
One Weird Thing: Unrequited interest.
"The tragedy of love is indifference." [W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965)]

One God Thing: Faith.
4 For a thousand years in your sight
are like yesterday when it is past,
or like a watch in the night.
5 You sweep them away; they are like a dream,
like grass that is renewed in the morning;
6 in the morning it flourishes and is renewed;
in the evening it fades and withers.
[Psalms 90: 4-6]
One Music Thing: Dreams.
"Do you feel my strength when you call my name?"
["Love's Light," by Vertical Horizon, from There and Back Again]
One Book Thing: Anticipation.
This weekend I get to place an Amazon.com order--all for me!
"Talk of the happiness of getting a prize in a lottery! What is that to the opening of a box of books?" [Robert Southey]

1.09.2008

Wednesday morning

One Good Thing: The sun is supposed to come out, briefly, today. Finally.
One Funny Thing: ...uh... I can't think of anything right now. It's ironic that I have to wait 10 minutes to leave for work so that I don't spend that 10 minutes sitting in traffic. I'll get to work at the same time either way. School buses, etc.
One Weird Thing: In spite of the health issues whirling around us right now, I spent the night worrying about one of the youth group girls. Transference? Not that the concerns aren't real, it just seems like a weird priority for my brain

One God Thing: "But I call to God,
and the LORD saves me.

Evening, morning and noon
I cry out in distress,
and he hears my voice." Psalm 55:16-17
One Music Thing: In my head, I'm hearing "How long..." as sung by Bono.
One Book Thing: I've got four books going--five, if you count the one on CD--right now.

1.01.2008

Tuesday afternoon

One Good Thing: UM defeats Florida, 41-35, in the Capitol One Bowl -- Lloyd Carr's final game as UM head coach.
One Funny Thing: I hadn't realized that Michigan made it to a bowl game this year, until I turned on the TV this afternoon at the beginning of the 3rd quarter. Bad fan....
One Weird Thing: It's colder than [bleep] outside and still snowing. I literally don't remember the last day that was snow-free.

One God Thing: "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down his life for his friends."
[John 15:13]
One Music Thing: Leona Naess -- introduced to me by my friend Gayle -- is awesome. Look for the song "Chase" from Comatised.
One Book Thing: I got another book for Christmas! Repair, a Pulitzer Prize-winning collection of poetry by C.K. Williams, arrived while I was away. Yay!
